San Antonio Express-News staff writers Deborah Martin and René Guzman gab on the Mad Maxian fun of “New Best Friends,” the latest episode of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”
SAN ANTONIO — Well, cry me a river of “shiny and chrome” and call me Immortan Joe. Did Sunday’s “The Walking Dead” just veer into crazy “Mad Max” territory? Even better question: More, please?
Sunday’s “New Best Friends” episode almost literally threw Rick Grimes into the hellish stink pits of “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” what with its own post-apocalyptic cage match and creepy yet charismatic despot with clipped language skills to oversee the action. And boy did we love it.
Sure, taking the “Mad Max” route may seem gimmicky for this gritty series. But we’ve already set the table for some quasi-fantasy gonzo action with a very theatrical king and his pet tiger. So why not throw in the next best thing to “Thunderdome’s” Aunty Entity with Jadis, and second coming of “Fury Road’s” Coma-Doof Warrior with the spiky cage rat walker known as Winslow?
Not that it was all “Fury Road” funnies. We also got some great Carol/Daryl moments, and Morgan’s ever-loosening grip on his inner peace makes for even more dramatic gravitas to dig.
