Warning: Spoilers ahead
Though judges praised their dishes, Chicagoans Logan Hagene and Na’Imah Johnson did not make it through the first round on Thursday’s Season 5 premiere of "MasterChef Junior."
Na’Imah, now 11 years old, was part of a group of four girls tasked with making a tartlet in 45 minutes. The Barnard Elementary School student, who lives in Beverly, served a vanilla bean tart with bourbon peaches and pecans. The dish was inspired by her grandmother, who taught her how to bake.
Judge Gordon Ramsay said the pastry was a "little undercooked, but I have to say, I love those peaches and bourbon. That really lifts the tart."
Two other girls in that group were given "MasterChef Junior" aprons to advance to the next round. Forty contestants, all between the ages of 8 and 13, vie for 20 aprons in the two-night premiere.
Move over, Grant Achatz and Stephanie Izard.
Five Chicago-area kids are among 40 young chefs competing on Season 5 of “MasterChef Junior,” scheduled to premiere 7 p.m. Thursday on Fox. The contestants, all between the ages of 8 and 13, vie for 20 spots in the kitchen in the two-night premiere.

Logan was part of the group that cooked seafood dishes on Thursday’s episode.
A self-proclaimed "seafood specialist," Logan made salmon tacos with heirloom cherry tomatoes, chips, pineapple salsa and guacamole.
Judge Christina Tosi said Logan’s salmon was undersalted, but the concept of the dish seemed to win her over.
"My first ever salmon taco, and I’m not mad about it, Logan," Tosi said. Two other contestants in that group earned aprons.
Though these young chefs are no longer part of the Fox competition, they have their own projects cooking. Ten-year-old Logan, who lives in Lincoln Square and attends school in Evanston, has a YouTube channel and Na’Imah runs a home bakery, NaNiNu Batter Cakes, with her two sisters.
