A solo exhibit by self-taught artist Carlos DeMedeiros will open Saturday, feb. 18 at the Guttenberg Arts Gallery, 6903 Jackson St.
DeMedeiros works with found and discarded objects, reassembling them into scenes or sculptures.
Titled “Cabinet of Curiosities,” the exhibit aims to recreate the environment of the artist studio, highlighting the sensitivity of his aesthetics. DeMedeiros is Brazilian-born and a former Monastic scholar. He lives in New Jersey and works at the Sun Union Mill Lofts in Union City.
He has said of his work, “All of my pieces are reflections of my experiences I truly believe that art is a tonic for the human spirit.”
He has participated in exhibitions at the New York Public Library, Art Students League of New York, the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, Bluffton University’s Grace Albrecht Gallery in Ohio, and the Outsider Art Fair in New York among others.
Opening reception for the show is 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the gallery.
