Andreas Mitisek will step down as general director of Chicago Opera Theater when his contract expires in September, the company announced Saturday. He will be succeeded by Douglas Clayton, COT’s executive director since 2015.

The Viennese-born Mitisek, 54, said he is leaving on his own accord to "focus on a couple of dream projects that are important to me and that I want to develop with several opera companies."

According to the organization, under Mitisek’s watch, COT eliminated all outstanding debt, created a cash reserve of more than $850,000 and received the largest gifts in the company’s history.

Mitisek, who has held his position since 2012, will direct an opera for COT in 2017-18 as part of the season he and Clayton are planning jointly. The company has launched a search for a part-time music director to assume that position following Mitisek’s departure.

COT announced previously that Mitisek will conduct its world premiere of Stewart Copeland’s "The Invention of Morel" later this month and Philip Glass’ "The Perfect American" in April.
