JERSEY CITY — Two Jersey City brothers arrested on weapons offenses after a shooting last month are now facing accusations they shot the victim, authorities said.
John Infante, 22, and Jeyson Infante, 18, both of Jewett Avenue, are charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault on the 30-year-old man who was shot in the ankle just after midnight on Jan. 3 at Bergen and Lexington avenues in Jersey City.
Officers responding to the report of shots being fired spotted a black Audi fleeing the neighborhood and stopped the vehicle on Jewett Avenue near Monticello Avenue. Police recovered a handgun and arrested the driver, John Infante, and his brother Jeyson, Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said at the time.
When the pair made their first court appearance on the charges Wednesday, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Zuppa said the charges were upgraded after the investigation connected the gun to the shooting. Both are charged with shooting at the 30-year-old “10 times in an attempt to kill the victim,” the criminal complaints state.
While police were at the scene the victim was standing next to detectives while they investigated the shooting, but he did not inform them that he had been injured. It wasn’t until the victim showed up at Jersey City Medical Center that authorities learned he had been wounded.
On the day of the shooting, Jayson Infante was additionally charged with multiple drug offenses related to three small knotted bags containing cocaine. He was also charged on Feb. 7 with drug counts related to 12 glassine bags containing heroin and 18 bags containing marijuana, the court documents indicate.
When the pair appeared in Criminal Justice Reform court in Jersey City Wednesday, Zuppa moved for their detention pending their trial. Detention hearings for the brothers will be held Monday before Hudson County Judge Paul DePascale in the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City.
