Martell Chisholm, 30 of Pleasantville and Demetris Cross, 28, of Bridgeton, face a 13-count indictment on charges including attempted murder and robbery.
Chisholm, Cross and a third man, Jerome Damon, 25, of Camden, were attempting to rob three men near the Caesars parking garage in the early-morning hours of Sept. 3 when officer Josh Vadell and his partner arrived.
Vadell was shot at as he stepped out of the patrol car before his still-unnamed partner returned fire and struck Damon, police said. The three alleged robbers and the three victims then scattered, police said. Damon was found collapsed on the ground a block away, where he was declared dead, police said.
Chisolm and Cross were arrested later that day in Bridgeton after a manhunt, police said.
Vadell was shot in the head and spent 12 days in the hospital and another eight weeks recovering at a Pennsylvania rehabilitation facility before returning home on Nov. 8.
In addition to attempted murder and robbery, Chisholm and Cross were indicted on charges of aggravated assault, conspiracy, resisting arrest, obstructing the administration of law and various weapons offenses.
Last month, a grand jury declined to indict Vadell’s partner for shooting Damon.
Chisholm was convicted on robbery charges on Sept. 8, 2008 and spent five years in prison, according to New Jersey Department of Corrections records. Chisolm was also convicted of selling drugs and resisting arrest. He was released from Atlantic County Justice Facility in August 2013.
Cross had been in the Atlantic County Justice Facility four separate times between 2011 and 2015 on traffic warrants prior to September, according to Capt. Mike Kelly. Cross does not have any criminal convictions listed on the state Department of Corrections website.
