On Feb. 8 the Pennsylvania State Senate passed Senate Bill 3, among the most restrictive abortion laws in the country. This bill bans a safe, medically-accepted procedure known as dilation and evacuation after 19 weeks gestation while providing no exception for rape, incest or fetal anomaly.
This procedure is often used to address miscarriage. I know two women who have undergone this procedure, a preschool teacher of special needs children and a university professor. Severe fetal anomaly in both cases necessitated the termination of these very much wanted and hoped for pregnancies. To criminalize these women and their doctors is a gross injustice.
The Senate did not allow a public hearing for this bill. Medical professional organizations such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Pennsylvania Medical Society strongly oppose this legislation.
SB3 will be sent to the state House of Representatives when it reconvenes in March. Please contact your state representative to demand a public hearing and a vote against this unjust legislation.
